Fundamental Slot Terms and Concepts

Slot machines are not complicated to learn. Nevertheless it would help you to know some basic slot terms and concepts.

Bonus Game

Modern slot machines include a bonus game. It is not a slot game but rather a mini-video game built into the slot machine. The player can win extra coins by playing it. The bonus game is activated by a certain combination in the slot machine game.

Cold / Hot Slot Machine

When a slot machine does not give winning spins for a long time, it is said to be cold. When it pays out often, on the other hand, it is labeled hot. There is really no such thing as hot or cold periods in slot machines as anything can take place in the short term. A tight slot machine can *seem* cold and a loose machine can seem cold sometimes. Hold

Loose / Tight Slot Machines

Max Bet

Max bet means to wager the most number of coins allowed on a slot machine. It is usually 3 to 5 coins but it could be different. Often a bonus payout is given for max bets. If there is no bonus, there is no special advantage to max betting.

Multi-Payline

A slot machine with more than one payline gives the appearance of having more chances of winning. It is common for modern slot machines to have multiple paylines that go in all directions: straight, diagonal, curving and so on.

Payback

The amount of money paid out to players by the slot machine. It is taken from all wagers made to it by the players themselves, and is thus a percentage of those total wagers.

Pay Cycle

It is believed by some that slot machines have a cycle of operation. According to this theory, a slot machine is due to pay out after a certain number of plays.

Progressive

A slot machine that has a steadily increasing jackpot. Each slot machine connected to the jackpot adds a percentage of its accumulated money to the jackpot. Once it is won, the jackpot is reset to the original starting value.

Random Number Generator

The computer chip inside the slot machine that determines what symbols end up on the payline. The decisions are quite random and 7unpredictable.

Scatter Symbol

A scatter symbol pays out no matter where it appears on the screen.

Slot Club

A slot club gives many benefits for the player such as free stuff, rebates, cash back, and various amenities. These are known as comps. The casinos put a slot club in their establishments as incentive for players to play slots regularly.

Video Slot Machine

A video slot machine is a computer-simulated version of a mechanical one-armed bandit. The reels are not really there; a computer program just gives the appearance of reels spinning. Video slots are difficult, if not impossible, to be manipulated or hacked into unlike old-fashioned slots.

Wild Symbol

A wild symbol takes on the character of whatever symbol would give the player the best combination.
